Modig Fitness Member Profile – Abby Derbyshire

Did you think with this whole Covid-19 bananas, we would stop telling you about our members? Heck no! Okay, maybe it’s been a hot minute since we’ve done one of these member profile things, but considering 2020 has lasted a decade, time is all relative. Anyway, we continue to have a thriving community here at Modig Fitness and we wanted to share a little about one of our members, Abby Derbyshire! Abby has been with us for over a year; coming to us by way of a “Fitness Challenge,” and has been hooked ever since. Take a minute to read a bit about her!

  1. Where did you grow up? I grew up in Connecticut and moved to Colorado 2 years ago.
  2. How long have you been CrossFitting? I’ve been CrossFitting for about a year and a half and the entire time with Modig!
  3. What is your favorite WOD (Workout of the Day)? Honestly, I think my favorite benchmark WOD would be Murph… if it involves running, I’m there!
  4. What is your favorite lift? I recently started incorporating more barbell movements in the strength aspect of the workout (previously only used dumbbells), so that’s been really fun! The deadlift is a classic. I’ve also become a fan of the snatch.
  5. What is your least favorite movement? Devil’s press!
  6. What do you think is the biggest misconception about high intensity fitness and lifting weights? I think the biggest myth is the misconceptions that come along with it, that I might “bulk up” and get huge, that it would be too much for my body. But it’s not the case! I’ve gotten stronger and in much better shape!
  7. What are some of your favorite things to do? I love the outdoors: hiking, running, backpacking, snowboarding, camping.
  8. Have your nutritional habits changed since joining Modig Fitness? My nutritional habits have shifted quite a bit! I’ve been a vegan for about 3 and a half years now, but I was able to work with a nutrition coach at Modig Fitness that helped me understand how to properly fuel and implement healthy changes in my eating habits and dietary choices. I’ve definitely upped the protein and become more mindful about what I’m eating and how it will help me reach my goals.
  9. What is your nickname? I don’t have a nickname per se, but my friends call me Abs. One day, I’ll have them to match the nickname!
  10. What do you do for a living? I work in substance abuse and mental health treatment. I’m also a graduate student at MSU for a Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics.
  11. What is something about you that people don’t know? I’m a spontaneous person; I enjoy traveling and experiencing new places, I’ve lived out of a backpack and a car multiple times. I also lived on a small island, off of Rhode Island, for 5 years which was life changing to say the least.
  12. How has Modig Fitness and working out here impacted your life? Modig has been more than a daily workout and more than just a gym. Not to be cliche, but it has really changed my life. Modig has helped me find a home within my body and an appreciation for what I can do physically. It has helped me become stronger physically and mentally, especially in performance. Modig Fitness in particular has helped me learn and grow as an athlete and as a person. It feels like a home that I get to go to each day and be a part of a bigger energy.
  13. Given the recent months dealing with the Global Pandemic, how has working out at Modig helped? During the pandemic, Modig has gone above and beyond in helping us stay connected and moving. Working out at home was hard, but the workouts kept me committed. Letting us borrow equipment was huge! And I was even able to work with a coach on the nutrition aspect, which otherwise I probably wouldn’t have had the means to do so.
