Modig Fitness Member Profile – The Braidech Family

When we talk about CrossFit being a community and family driven activity, it is evidenced on a daily basis at Modig Fitness. One family in particular, the Braidech Family, can often be found WODing, mobilizing and making jokes together at Modig Fitness! Longtime members of Modig Fitness, and working with David Goodenberger even before that, Todd, Lisa and son Camden personify the community and family aspect of CrossFit. Enjoy learning more about them!

  1. Where did you grow up?
    1. Camden- Littleton, Colorado
    2. Todd- Evergreen, Colorado
    3. Lisa – Clovis, California
  2. How long have you been CrossFitting?
    1. Camden- about 3 1/2 years
    2. Todd- 5 years
    3. Lisa- 5 years
  3. What is your favorite WOD and why?
    1. Camden- Grace because I like clean & jerks!
    2. Todd- Grace because the first time I did it was at Barbells for Boobs, it was the first workout I RX’d, and it is short.
    3. Lisa- a partner wod because you have someone to share the pain with and tell you to move your ass.
  4. What’s your favorite lift and why?
    1. Camden- deadlift, because I can do over my body weight.
    2. Todd- snatch, because I like that it is a technical lift that requires speed and balance.
    3. Lisa- cleans, because of the speed and timing required to be able to drop under a bar.
  5. What’s your least favorite CrossFit move and why?
    1. Camden-wall balls, because they aren’t very fun to do.
    2. Todd- thrusters, because these hips (that have been repaired) don’t like them.
    3. Lisa- both the above, because they are bad, and they suck.
  6. What do you think is the biggest myth about CrossFit?
    1. Camden- that kids can’t do it…I was able to modify and even do the CrossFit Open workouts last year.
    2. Todd- that you’ll get hurt doing CrossFit. Bad coaching and not accepting/knowing your own limits causes injury. Good coaching, like that at Modig, is key.
    3. Lisa- that you need to be in shape to start or do CrossFit. The best thing about CrossFit is with proper coaching anything is scalable. Whether you are just starting, dealing with injury or illness, there is always something you can do.
  7. What’s your favorite non-CrossFit activity?
    1. Camden – Golf!
    2. Todd- golf, skiing & hanging out with my family on the golf course
    3. Lisa- being with my family on or off the golf course and cooking a kick-ass meal.
  8. What is your nickname?
    1. Camden- The Pin Magnet
    2. Todd- At Modig, TBra, from childhood ski racing, Hot Toddy.
    3. Lisa- LB , some days it stands for little biscuit, some days little b*tch
  9. What do you do for a living?
    1. Camden- I’m currently being supported by my parents.
    2. Todd- spend lots of money on my son. Seriously…technology sales.
    3. Lisa- concierge services for The Braidech family and I moonlight as a teacher and caddie.
  10. What’s something about you that people probably don’t know?
    1. Camden- that I travel nationally for golf tournaments and have played in the Junior World Championships the last 2 years in California.
    2. Todd- I was on the 1989 junior Olympic ski team…I totally rocked in high school. Also, I enjoy getting mani/pedis and getting my toenails painted with my family and believe personal hygiene is important.
    3. Lisa- I was part of a national championship winning cheer squad…I too rocked in high school.  But the biggest, is that Todd and I streaked through the  Antler Arches in Jackson Hole town square.
  11.  If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
    1. Camden- sushi
    2. Todd- I can’t pick just one, the first would be Lisa’s fettucine Alfredo with almond flour noodles (gluten free that way) and BBQ.
    3. Lisa- smothered bean burrito with the caramel apple tart from Sansei Sushi in Maui.
  12. What was the last book you read?
    1. Camden- the Star Wars trilogy
    2. Todd- The Night Before Christmas….and American Sniper
    3. Lisa- Before we were Strangers.
  13. What impact has CrossFit had on your life?
    1. Camden- CrossFit has given me more power & rhythm in my golf game and confidence within myself.
    2. Todd-  CrossFit has changed my life.  In April 2011 I got back from playing in a hockey tournament in Vegas, which is basically 3 days of drinking, interrupted by a few hockey games.  I was a little overweight, out of shape, and was soaked in booze and generally felt like ass.  I told Lisa something has to change and I want to try this CrossFit thing since it reminded me of training for skiing.  I found CrossFit, called and talked to David, and Lisa and I went to check it out.  We did the famous “7’s” intro workout and almost died.  Lisa said she hated me, so of course I asked if she wanted to go back and she said yes! We were the only ones in our On-Ramp class and I remember David looking at us when we were giggling about “snatching” and “clean and jerks” and he said “This is going to be fun”. Here we are 5 years later and still going, still giggling like 13 year olds, and still having fun.  Camden trains with Corey and to watch his mental and physical growth has been phenomenal.  I have had 3 major surgeries over the last few years, due to growing up ski racing and crashing A LOT, and then being a hockey goaltender.  I recovered faster than most professional athletes because of the conditioning provided by CrossFit going in to each surgery. That to me is a huge testament. It’s truly amazing to see what your body is capable of!  The community at Modig is fantastic.  We have met great people and made a ton of friends which makes us want to go to the Box, not have to go to the gym!  Thanks David, Corey, Justin, and the rest of the crew!
    3. Lisa- Aside from the physical changes that CrossFit has provided, the biggest impact for me has been the mental. Having grown up a competitive athlete, and being a pretty competitive person in general, I had lost a part of myself along the way. Working out and training had been a huge part of my life for twenty something years and then it stopped. Going to an aerobics class or just lifting by myself didn’t really fill the void. It wasn’t till a couple years into CrossFit I truly realized how important being back in the “training atmosphere” was to me. It has provided me an outlet to be competitive with myself, with the clock and other athletes through competitions. CrossFit has pushed me out of what had become my comfort zone and reminded me that “I can.”  I am much happier and more at peace since Todd made me start CrossFit. I would be neglecting a huge part of this if I didn’t credit the Modig community and the coaches…as cheesy as it sounds we have met people that have absolutely had a life changing impact on our family. Thank you!!!
